Pending food stamp cuts affect many

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Piggly Wiggly is a popular grocery store for people shopping with food stamps.

Gina Gerard, Assistant Manager at the store, says they see customers using food stamps a lot.

Gerard said customers use something called an EBT, which stands for Electronic Benefit Transfer. The EBT card replaced the old paper version of food stamps.

But if the state doesn't meet the USDA's requirements by February 10th, the federal government has threatened to pull administrative funding, which the state uses to administer the food stamp program.

If this were to happen, it could force those using the program, like William Wade, to change the way they shop. Wade said that he is disappointed that the funds may be cut.

"It makes me feel kind of bad because there's a whole lot of people out here that got BET and they relying on it," Wade said.

While the potential cut could affect stores as well, Gerard said she isn't worried about it.

"I could see where it might change some people's shopping habits, but there's always going to be a need for groceries," Gerard said. "I just hope that folks will find a way to make ends meet in the event that something like that happens."
