We're in for a couple days of inclement weather, featuring heavy rain, cold temperatures, and a bit of wind.  At this time it does look like Columbus and the surrounding area should be able to avoid any winter weather hazards.

A cold Canadian air mass has pushed southward and will cover much of the area by tonight.  The air with this high will not be bitterly cold, but just cold enough to create an environment for wintry precipitation of various types.  The first round will come tonight and Tuesday, leaving our area with rain but further north freezing rain, sleet, and snow become more likely.

As the high center drifts east, high pressure will build southward through the Piedmont and propel the colder air deep into Georgia and possibly Alabama in a classic cold-air damming or "wedge" situation. The brisk flow of cold air from the northeast, combined with clouds and rain, will likely keep Columbus temperatures in the 30s all day Wednesday, but likely remaining just above freezing.  Since a few degrees can make a huge difference in the precipitation regime, we advise viewers to stay with News3 for later updates on the forecast.

Further north, it will be cold enough in Atlanta, Athens, and possibly Augusta for a significant and crippling ice storm.  Those traveling north this week are already being urged to change travel plans beyond today.
