A Fort Benning bridge is closed after a truck pulling an excavator hit the bridge Monday afternoon.
A public works official says the excavator's arm was not lowered all the way, causing the machinery to exceed the height limit of the Custer Road bridge. The northbound lanes of the Lindsey Creek Bypass were closed as workers cleared the area but the damage to the bridge will take a while to repair.
"[The excavator] severed several of the pretension cables on the beams of the bridge," says Randel Lemoine of Fort Benning Public Works. "Those pretension cables hold most of the stress that keeps the beam in place, so at that point with those damaged, we have to close the bridge.
Fort Benning Public Works will come up with an emergency contracting plan to get the Custer Road Bridge repaired but Lemoine says it will most likely be at least three months before anyone can drive across the bridge.
