Duke freshman explains why she does pornography

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

A Duke University freshman who says she appears in porn films has written a first-person account of what she is doing for a website.

Her account for the xojane.com website is headlined, "I'm the Duke University freshman porn star and for the first time I'm telling the story in my words."

The story, from "Lauren A.," said she is often asked why she does pornography.

"However, the answer is actually quite simple. I couldn't afford $60,000 in tuition, my family has undergone significant financial burden, and I saw a way to graduate from my dream school free of debt, doing something I absolutely love. Because to be clear: My experience in porn has been nothing but supportive, exciting, thrilling and empowering."

She said she is "not ashamed" of working in the sex industry.

"On the contrary, doing pornography fulfills me," she said. "That said, I vehemently want to have my privacy respected -- and I ask that anyone who knows my real name respect the fact that I am only discussing this publicly because it was made a public matter when I was confronted by a fraternity member who chose to tell hundreds of other men in the Greek scene."

Her story became the talk of Durham last week, when student newspaper, The Chronicle, published a front-page story about her.  In that story, she said she flies to Los Angeles during her time off from school to participate in adult films. She told The Chronicle that her parents have no idea she is doing that.

She also said she felt "degraded" after working as a waitress in high school.

"To be perfectly honest, I felt more degraded in a minimum wage, blue-collar, low paying, service job than I ever did doing porn," she told The Chronicle.

Duke students are expected to abide by the Duke Community Standard, a set of broad guidelines for students. As part of that, students agree to "conduct myself honorably in all my endeavors; and I will act if the standard is compromised."
