Update: Lockdown lifted at Phenix City Central, Freshman Academy schools

Posted: Updated:
A lockdown at Phenix City Central High School and Freshman Academy has been lifted.

Around Noon, parents took to Facebook and Twitter asking why the school was on lockdown after many of them received text messages from their children telling them of the added security measure. News 3 made calls to the Phenix City School District and Phenix City Police Department and were told the campuses were not on lockdown.

News 3 made a visit to the campus and were told by a Joe Blevins, the district's director of operations, that the campuses had been put on a twenty minute lockdown beginning at about 11:30a. The Phenix City Police Department was looking for a suspect from a robbery that occurred adjacent to campus and had the concern the individual may be near the school, Blevins says.

It was not immediately known if the suspect was ever located. News 3 has called the Phenix City Police Department but has not heard back.
Blevins said the suspect was never on campus.

He added that parents should receive automated phone calls during situations like this but could not say for sure if such a call had been made this morning. He also added that the school district will try to do a better job in the future making sure those who answer the phones at the central office are kept up to date. He believes outdated information may have been the reason News 3 was initially told there was no lockdown.
