Tampa man convicted in tax fraud scheme wants jewelry back

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A Tampa man serving prison time in connection with a tax refund fraud scheme wants a fancy car, cash and jewelry back from the government.

Former car dealer Russell Simmons is asking for a 2005 green Bentley, more than $100,000 stored on debit cards, $25,000 in cash and a collection of jewelry that includes watches, and a 14k necklace featuring his initials "RS" and 703 diamonds.

The items were seized as part of the investigation into Simmons, who admitted in an interview with News Channel 8 last year that he used money from the tax refund crime to buy clothes and jewelry and to keep his business running.

The money, he said, was easy.

"You get addicted," he said in the interview from jail.

In a response to Simmons' request for the items, the government told the court the forfeitures were part of his plea deal and asked for his request to be denied.
