FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Cumberland County Sheriff's Detectives have charged a Fayetteville man with voluntary manslaughter.

Derrick Paul Randle, 32, of 5035 Doc Bennett Road was taken into custody for shooting and killing Christopher Lloyd Williams, 48, of 24 Jud Street in Fayetteville, early this morning.

Homicide investigators were called to Randle's home shortly before 5 a.m. when gunfire erupted.  When deputies arrived on scene, Randle came outside the home, fell to the ground and surrendered to law officers.

Randle told investigators that Williams and his mother were involved in an altercation and he tried to break it up.

Meanwhile, Williams was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and later died as a result of the injuries.  The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Raleigh for autopsy.

The investigation is continuing.
