Elementary school students learn about helmet safety

WINTERVILLE, N.C. - Fourth graders at Ridgewood Elementary in Winterville learned about helmet safety Wednesday morning.

Students received, and were fitted with bike helmets to encourage safety while riding bicycles.

The Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program and Safe Communities Coalition at Vidant Health partnered with the ECU College of Nursing students for the fitting. They’re working together to reduce the number of kids that go to the emergency department because of bike injuries.

“People are more inclined to have a helmet when they buy a bicycle or roller skates and that sort, but what they need to be reminded of is to wear them every time,” said Jennifer Smith, manager of the Eastern Carolina Injury Prevention Program.

Since 2001, North Carolina state law requires every person under 16 years of age to wear a helmet when riding a bike.
