CSU men, women prep for PBC Tourney

COLUMBUS, GA - The Columbus State men's basketball team will be in the Peach Belt Conference tournament thanks to a Clayton State loss Wednesday night.

Head coach Robert Moore jokingly says he should send a thank you letter to Young Harris for winning a game that clinched a CSU birth in the tournament.

The Cougars get to host the conference tournament for the second year in a row. The difference this year: the men's team gets to play.

“I think our guys will be excited about it,” said Coach Moore. “Our guys will be at home playing in front of the home crowd. I know the school and community will come out to support us. I'm looking for some big things in the tournament right now.”

“We really like coming to Columbus,” said Peach Belt Conference commissioner David Brunk. “We have had a lot of events here. We are hoping that next week, a lot of the community people will come out and support it.”

The Commissioner says the Peach Belt will change their format next year, the highest ranked men's team in the east will host the conference tournament and it will alternate to the highest ranked east and west team every year.

The Lady Cougars are also getting ready for the conference tournament. Coach Norton says he feels good about his team heading into the post season; he says the strategy changes when it is win or go home.

“Sometimes, you might be willing to sub in that 9th or 10th player,” said Coach Jonathan Norton. “But, not in the conference tournament when it is one and done. You want your best players on the floor for as many minutes as possible. That's one thing you do.”

The Peach Belt tournaments start a week from Thursday at the Lumpkin center.
