State-Carolina ending draws different calls on radio

Posted: Updated:

The dramatic ending to Wednesday's game between North Carolina and N.C. State drew two completely different reactions from the announcers calling the game for their respective schools.

UNC broadcaster Jones Angell erupted with enthusiasm when Tar Heel point guard Marcus Paige got a screen and zipped down the left side of the paint for a game-winning layup.

"Marcus Paige to the rim. Got it! Got it!" Angell said into the microphone with a roar in his voice as the PNC Arena crowd rocked. "Nine tenths of a second to go.

"Inbounds. Washington gets it to Warren. His fullcourt shot – no good!! Marcus Paige does it for the Tar Heels. Carolina wins it, 85-84."

State's last chance came when T.J. Warren, who had a monster game for the Wolfpack, took the inbounds pass with less than a second left and heaved up a long shot.

Here's how veteran Wolfpack broadcaster Gary Hahn called the ending for the Wolfpack Sports Network, with his voice dropping as the final horn sounded:

"Here's Paige, up the right side. Four … three .. Paige down the lane to the basket, throws it up left-handed, banks it in with point-nine remaining. Washington to inbound for State. Heels have the lead. Warren throws up a 60 footer.

"No good. Heels win."
