Organization at NC State hands out life-saving, anti-overdose drug

RALEIGH, N.C. -

College students at North Carolina State University are getting easier access to a drug that can end up saving a life.

Members of the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition were on campus Tuesday to raise awareness about drug overdose.

Volunteers were handing out information about resources available to students and Overdose Rescue Medical Kits that contain a medicine called Naloxone.

"It is a prescription, non-abusable, effective medication that reverses opioid overdoses," explained volunteer and N.C. State event organizer Andi Deroin. "We're able as an organization to give those out free of charge or for a small donation to individuals who want to save lives."

It's used to counter the effects of an overdose of drugs like morphine or heroin.

NCHRC's Overdose Rescue Medical Kits are permitted in the state of North Carolina by SB 20, effective April 2013.  To view the kits label, please click HERE.  These kits include naloxone, alcohol pads, 3cc syringes and a rescue breathing mask.

The NCHRC says since the Overdose Prevention Project started Aug. 1, it has dispensed over 700 overdose rescue kits which include naloxone and have received 45 confirmed reports that the life-saving medication was administered successfully by lay individuals.

"With unintentional drug overdoses threatening to become the leading cause of accidental deaths in North Carolina, the need to increase access to overdose prevention education and naloxone could not be greater," the NCHRC said.
