Smiths Station man charged with stealing car from Opelika HS

Posted: Updated:
OPELIKA, Ala. - A Smiths Station man was arrested Monday for his involvement with a car theft at Opelika High School. 29-year-old Henry Palmer is accused of stealing an older model Chevrolet pick-up truck from the school in February, according to the Opelika Police Department. Police also say several other vehicles were broken into that night.

A suspect vehicle was captured on video which was subsequently forwarded to the local news media. With the assistance of the community, the Opelika Police Department Detective Division received a tip that led to a suspect living in the Smiths Station, Alabama community, according to a news release by Opelika Police Captain Bruce DeLong.

DeLong says detectives responded to a residence and located a large amount of motor vehicle parts. A search warrant was obtained by the Opelika Police Department and with the assistance of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office the search warrant was executed. Numerous stolen items were recovered from the property to include items stolen from two recently stolen trucks in Opelika, according to police. The National Insurance Crime Bureau assisted with the identification of the stolen property.

Palmer is charged with two counts of Receiving Stolen Property, as well as Operating a Motor Vehicle Theft Facility, and Removing an Identification Number from a Motor Vehicle Component. He is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Center.
