KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

A Bristol man was arrested by Kingsport Police Department officers Wednesday for a domestic incident where he reportedly lunged at his ex-wife with a knife and threw liquors bottles at her inside a Kingsport restaurant.

According to a KPD news release, officers were called to Longhorn Steakhouse, 1750 E. Stone Drive, in regards to a domestic violence incident around 4:45 p.m.

When officers arrived, Harley David Byington, 43, 330 Godsey Road, Lot 21, was being restrained by an employee in the front of the restaurant, but he was able to get away and leave the scene on foot by running across East Stone Drive toward East Stone Commons Shopping Plaza.

Police reportedly went after Byington, but said they lost sight of him.

An investigation into the domestic incident, officers found that Byington and his ex-wife had been in court in Bristol earlier that day in regards to domestic violence.

When they left the courtroom, he reportedly showed up at his ex-wife’s residence and asked her to drive him to Rogersville.

During the drive, they started to argue and Byington threatened to harm his ex-wife and her child.

According to the release, she told him to stop the vehicle, got out and went into Longhorn.

When she reportedly went into the ladies restroom, he followed her inside and hit her face with his hands and lunged at her with a utility knife.

Byington then locked arms with her and forced her out of the restroom, but she then broke away and ran behind the bar.

According to the release, he went after her and started hit her with liquor bottles.

Witnesses said Byington shouted “Before this day is done, you and that baby will be dead, and they will have to kill me to take me down.”

Employees and restaurant patrons stepped in to help restrain Byington and stop the assault.

His ex-wife reportedly had various bruises and cuts from the attack, but was not seriously injured.

KPD continued to search for Byington following the incident and he reportedly returned to his vehicle at 9 p.m., where he started to drive out of the parking lot.

Police in the area approached him in an attempt to stop him, but Byington reportedly sped off in the vehicle onto Indian Court.

According to the release, Byington ran the red light onto East Stone Drive, jumped a concrete median flattening the front tires, traveled westbound in the eastbound lanes head-on into oncoming traffic and eventually turned into the parking lot of Buffalo Wild Wings, 1721 E. Stone Drive.

Byington then reportedly accelerated his car to the end of the parking lot, where he crashed into a tree on the Green Belt next to the parking lot.

He was arrested and was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County EMS for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

While at the hospital, a baggie with marijuana and 18 orange pills, identified as an anti-depressant medication called Amitriptyline, was located in Byington’s rectum.

According to the release, he was released from Holston Valley and was taken to Kingsport City Jail, where he was being held without bond.

Byington was charged with felony evading arrest, driving on a revoked license as a habitual traffic offender, possession of a schedule IV drug, possession of a schedule VI drug, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving left of center, failure to comply with financial responsibility law, violation of registration and violation of seat belt law.

He also reportedly had charges stemming from the initial incident, which included aggravated domestic assault and evading arrest.

Byington was scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court on March 20.
