The First Tee Program comes to Muscogee County Elementary Schools

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - Students at 23 local elementary schools will get the chance to learn a new sport but also learn some life skills in the process. There are 9 key values students learn in the First Tee Program.

"It's basically learning by doing," said Cherie Mathews, a National School Trainer.

Physical education teachers spent Friday morning doing just that, using plastic golf clubs, tennis balls, and other child friendly equipment. The teachers learned a new sport so they could teach their elementary school students how to play the game of golf.

"So they had the deer in the headlights experience and then all of a sudden hey I can do this. It's fun. I'm enjoying it. I can teach it," said Mathews.

Educators rotated through 4 stations where they learned the putting stroke, chipping, pitching, and the full swing. Students will learn more than just golf. Each lesson teaches a core value that the elementary aged children can use for the rest of their lives. Student learn about honestly, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgement. Integrity is also one of the core values. The physical education teachers focused on how it could play a role outside the classroom.

"We find a dollar bill laying on the ground in the school hallway. Integrity would allow us to pick that dollar bill up and turn it into its owner instead of sticking it in our pocket," said a physical education teacher.

Students also learn healthy habits so they can lead active lifestyles in the future. Georgia Power and The Southern Company provided the funding for equipment at the 23 schools. They have committed to launch the First Tee Program at 1,000 schools in the Southeast over the next 5 years.
