CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

Tuesday was another day off from school thanks to what hasturned out to be a long, harsh winter.

Local school districts made the call this morning to cancelclasses after calling for just delays initially.

But what goes into making that decision to cancel, even if it'slast minute?

"We want to have school whenever possible and whenever it issafe to do so," explained Todd LoFrese, with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools."Having more time to make decisions allows us to make more accurate decisions."

LoFrese, the assistant superintendent of support services forChapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, says a lot goes into making that decision tocancel. CHCCS called for a three-hour delay Monday night, but decided to cancelaround 8 a.m. Tuesday.

"We look at forecast, we look at current temperatures, precipitationamounts, existing conditions," LoFresesaid. "We also look at what is happeningin neighboring counties because we have staff members who are traveling fromthose locations."

In Wake County, the cancellation came earlier at 7:25 a.m. afterthey say road crews tested the roads and decided it was too risky.

Now the next decision for schools is when to make up this latestweather day.

Chapel Hill schools will make up Tuesday's weather day on June12. Wake County Schools has not announced its make up day.

Thousands of motorists pass stopped school buses every day, and many of them may not even realize they are breaking the law. It's an issue that has received intense attention in North Carolina, with 13 children being hit, and killed, at bus stops since 1999. One survey on March 26 of this year recorded 429 times where a driver roared past a stopped school bus in Wake County alone. In Durham County, there were 89 violations that same day and Cumberland County had a whopping 210. Johnston Coun...
