CARY, N.C. -

Wake County Superintendent revealed his proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year Tuesday night for the largest school system in the state.

Superintendent Jim Merrill gave the board of education an overview of his $1.37 billion budget for next year at the board's meeting Tuesday night.

The proposed budget alsoincreases teacher pay to reach national averages for teacher salaries by 2020. Merrill said that would require about $130 million.

"While we are encouraged by recent comments by the governor concerning state salary increases for early career teachers, we need to send a strong local message to our employees of their worth and importance," Merrill said in a release.

Merrill asks for the return of additional intervention staff at high schools with graduation rates below 80 percent. The proposed budget also includes new Spanish and Chinese immersion programs and a 3.5-percent salary increase for all employees in the Wake County Public School System.
