RALEIGH, N.C. -

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison confirmed six detention officers lost their jobs as the result of an investigation into inappropriate relationships with inmates.

Lt. Linda Hicks resigned after it was found she had an inappropriate relationship with inmate Amanda Hayes. Harrison said it involved doing favors for Hayes, such as letting her stay out longer than expected.

Following the resignation of Hicks, reports of other inappropriate relationships surfaced resulting in the termination of five other officers.

"The detention officer has a tough job.  I'll tellyou that up front, but they have policies to follow just like all the rest ofus," Harrison said. "And that is not doing favors.  You do what you're supposed to doto make sure the inmates are taken care of and that's it."

Hayes was found guilty of second-degree murder Feb. 19 in the 2011 death of Laura Ackerson. Ackerson was the ex-girlfriend of Amanda Hayes' husband, Grant Hayes, who was found guilty of first-degree murder last year for his role in Ackerson's death.
