ROSEBORO: Fundraiser for soldier severely injured at Fort Bragg - WRBL

Fundraiser for soldier severely injured at Fort Bragg

Posted: Updated:

A fundraiser and dinner at a Roseboro restaurant is raising money for a wounded United States Army Sergeant.

25-year-old Cory Muzzy was seriously injured, not on the battlefield, but during a training mission at Fort Bragg in February.

The Army has not said what kind of accident caused the injuries but almost a month later, Muzzy remains at Duke University Medical Center.

Muzzy had to have part of his right leg and part of his left foot amputated.  He broke one of his arms and is blind in both eyes.  He has also undergone more than a dozen surgeries since the accident.

Another soldier, 22-year-old James Groth died in the accident.

"You're really not expecting that ever to happen in their training environment," Spc. Kevin Calloway said.

"After it happened, I saw the flash ... and at that point, everything went dark," Staff Sgt. Gonzalo Mariquez said.

Mariquez also sustained injuries.  He still has trouble hearing out of one of his ears.  Tonight, he's showing his support for his injured friend.

"He's probably one of the toughest people I've ever met in my entire life.  He's got that ... he's just got attitude of never quit, never quit attitude," he said.

It's a never quit attitude shared by Muzzy's wife, Michelle.

"It's pretty amazing.  I never in my life expected strangers to come out of the wood work and help us," Michelle Muzzy said.

His parents are touched that so many people have offered their support, both emotionally and financially.  Organizers hoped to raise thousands of dollars from the benefit.  A fundraising website to pay for medical bills has raised nearly $20,000 more.

"If it wasn't for the support that Cory's mother and I have been getting, I don't know how we would have dealt with it.  We just have so many people out their helping us and it's...I'm just blessed.  I'm happy," father Barry Gene Wirt said.
