Bowl for Kids Sake raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA - Here in Columbus, volunteers helped the community by spending time with young boys and girls around the Chattahoochee Valley. News Three's Naomi Keitt says the annual Bowl for Kids Sake raised money for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of the Chattahoochee Valley.

"I had always heard what a wonderful program Big Brothers, Big Sisters is so I wanted to get involved and see if I could make the difference in the life of a child," said Janet Crane.

Janet found her match in Dayannara. The two have been paired since last August and spend time with each other every week.

"We've even ice skating. We go to the Columbus Cottonmouths games. We've been to the movies. We've been to the park," said Crane.

They are just one of the many Big Brother, Big Sister pairs that came to the bowling alley Saturday afternoon to spend time with each other and raise money for the organization. At Friday's bowling event, they raised $50,000 and plan on exceeding the goal Saturday. The CEO of The Family Center says the mentoring program is essential to the community.

"There are so many children that need that extra guidance. It helps them do better in school. It helps them avoid risky behaviors and just gives them that companion, someone to talk to," said Lisa Scrivner, CEO of The Family Center.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson took part part in the festivities Saturday giving the group a proclamation. For Janet, she says she has definitely enjoyed the experience.

"It's just a very rewarding experience that everybody should take part in to give back to the community," Crane.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters is in need of male mentors. If you are interested you can call them at 706-327-3760.
