CARRBORO, N.C. -

A Carrboro couple is optimistic after meeting with the principal of the school where they say their children have faced a bully problem since last September.

Renaldo Carvalho and Alyona Bogdanova met with the principal of Frank Porter Graham Elementary School for the first time Thursday after they say a student has bullied their son and daughter for the past six months.

The family said they've talked with an assistant principal, a teacher and the district office; but until today, Bogdanova said they hadn't been able to meet with the school's principal, Emily Bivins.

"We came this far because of media attention that we got," Bogdanova said. "Thank you for that."

Bogdanova said Bivins offered to bring in school system employees from outside the school to investigate. Bivins also set up a meeting between them and the purported bully's family.

"We're hopeful that this family meeting and the investigation will help things moving along," Bogdanova said. "But given how difficult it's been to accomplish these small things, it's also discouraging."

Carvalho added, "I hope by meeting with the family on the 10th of April, we are going to get to the bottom of this; because meeting with the principal today, we didn't get that far."

While Bogdanova is hopeful that the meeting will bring some resolution, she remains frustrated that the principal says that what has happened with her children does not meet the definition of bullying because it's a two-way situation.

"I asked the principal, 'Do you have any record of our son being physically or verbally abusive to other persons?' She said, 'No,'" Bogdanova said. "So, I am confused. How does it not meet criteria of bullying?"

Bogdanova said her son has endured pushing, punching and name calling, while she said the bully spits on her daughter's lunch room table.

"It's horrible," Bogdanova said. "My son came home once and said, 'That's it. I want to move back. I can not take this anymore.' His stomach was hurting until the night of that day that he got punched in the stomach."

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools spokesman Jeff Nash said the issue is more complex than it seems.

"We take student altercations very seriously in our school district," Nash said. "This situation is more complex than it would appear at first glance."

Privacy rules prevent the school system from saying what, if any, discipline the alleged bully has received.

The couple filed a police report earlier this week and is considering pressing charges if they are not satisfied with the meeting with other parents and actions at the school.
