ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -

North Carolina's recent changes to elections and voting laws will get more attention, this time from a national organization that ultimately wants to write reports for elected officials on how to improve voting rights.

A group called the National Commission on Voting Rights has scheduled a hearing Friday in Rocky Mount to hear testimony on problems with voting in North Carolina. The commission is organized by the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law on behalf of several civil rights groups. The commission has held nine other hearings across the country.

A law approved by the General Assembly last summer reduced the number of early voting days by one week, ended same-day registration and requires photo identification to vote in person in 2016. These provisions are being challenged in court.
