Following an article posted by Global Healing Center titled “7 Tips for Starting Your Own Organic Garden,” there are many benefits of having an organic garden. Organic gardens enable homeowners to have fresh fruits and vegetables without consuming harmful pesticides. Typically, the article says homegrown organic produce is also cheaper than going to the supermarket.
A representative from Colle Farmers Market explains that starting an organic garden is not as hard as it may sound, and the benefits outweigh the resources needed to start planting. “It may take time and hard work to start an organic garden, but it will benefit you in the long run. It not only provides you with fresh organic food of your own, but it becomes a great activity for individuals and families. Eating homegrown 100 percent organic food is a great feeling. It will keep you and your family healthier and safer, while still helping the environment.”
The Colle rep discusses six tips to starting an organic garden:
1. Plan Ahead. “The first thing that needs to be done is deciding on a budget and what fruits and vegetables are to be planted,” the Colle rep says.
2. Don’t over plant. ”It is best to start small, especially during the first attempt,” he says. “Each new harvest is a good time to expand a little bit, as knowledge and experience increases.”
3. Plant the right plants. ”Choose fruits and vegetables that are compatible with your garden’s climate,” the rep says.
4. Share with your neighbors. ”If there is a surplus of supplies, such as seeds, give them to neighbors,” he says. “They may return the favor in the future.”
5. Go organic from the very beginning. “Make sure the seeds are also organic! For a truly organic farm, the produce should be organic from seed to harvest,” the rep explains.
6. Grow plants that complement each other. “Some plants, such as beans and squash flourish when planted next to each other,” he says.
