Website ranks schools based on return on investment

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

It's a list that many colleges and universities don't want to be on---ranking your return on investment for your degree.

Recent research by the website PayScale, shows what they call the most valuable colleges and majors in America, based on self-reported earnings by graduates.

In return, it also shows what they would call the least valuable colleges and majors.

But some schools at the bottom of the list say it is baseless.

In North Carolina, East Carolina University, Fayetteville State University, and Shaw University were all ranked negatively.

But will their majors and degrees really put you in the red?

The schools say no.

Both FSU and Shaw released statements calling the findings seriously flawed.

The website doesn't include graduates who later earn advanced degrees that could increase earning potential, and at FSU for example, many of their graduates become teachers, who historically are paid less.

Meaning, reports like these don't necessarily mean the school is flawed.

Some students at Shaw said they were perfectly happy with their education there and what dividends it might bring.

Shaw also says it was named one of 34 "historically black colleges that pay" by another database.

"We challenge PayScale to issue a ranking that takes into account all data, not just alumni compensation, to accurately reflect which universities provide the best return on investment," Shaw added in a statement.
