CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The leader of the Democratic National Committee is slated to be in North Carolina to build support for dozens of female candidates in the state who support abortion rights.

DNC chairwoman Debbie Wassermann Schultz was the scheduled keynote speaker at Monday's campaign kickoff luncheon in Chapel Hill for Lillian's List of North Carolina. Attorney General Roy Cooper and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall also are among the featured participants.

At least 400 people were expected to attend, with event proceeds helping to train and recruit female candidates.

The group was started in 1997 and backs women who are pro-abortion rights. It's named for Lillian Exum Clement, the first woman elected to the General Assembly in 1921.
