Community reacts after shooting at South Columbus lounge

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - This latest shooting has community activists on edge, calling for a crack-down into the night clubs around the area. News 3's Naomi Keitt spoke to several of those activists Tuesday and says their main concern in the youth.

"We have lost too many of our young people to these nightclubs and it's time for them to get busy," said Reverend Willie Phillips.

Reverend Phillips is calling on city officials and people in the community to take a closer look at the night venues in the area. Tuesday's shooting happened just one year after 20 year old Shannon Fields was shot to death inside Foxy Lady Lounge. That nightclub is just steps away from Carousel Lounge. Ultimately, Reverend Phillips wants these nightclubs in South Columbus shut down for good.

"Both of these clubs right together two people have been killed and that's enough to really do something about these places," said Phillips.

Richard Jessie, another community activist, says after Tuesday's early morning homicide the community needs to reengage the young adults and encourage them to make wiser choices.

"The problem is slowly we have gotten away from some of the basic principles that this nation was built on. Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, the golden rule. If we would practice that we we see bullying alleviated," said Jessie.

Jessie says in years past the community has gathered together to fight drugs and violence and he wants to see that happen again.

"We've allowed things to get sort of out of hand but just as sure as we allowed them to get where they are, we can go back and restore civility, restore peace adn harmony in this country and we're looking forward to that," said Jessie.
