HAMILTON, Ga. -

It was a bittersweet vote -- as the Chattahoochee County school board approved Dr. Jimmy Martin's resignation at Tuesday night’s board meeting.

After the school year, Martin will leave Chattahoochee County Schools, where he served as superintendent since 2008. Pending a vote on Thursday, Martin will become the superintendent for the Harris County School District.

“They're getting a superb superintendent,” said Christy Humber, Chattahoochee County Board Chair. “They're getting the best.”

After graduating from Auburn, Martin was a band director in Lee County and went on to serve as principal for several schools including Chattahoochee County High before being named superintendent for the district.

“I'm going to miss the people, when you're in a situation like this, in a community this close knit, you form relationships with people and those relationships are very dear to you,” said Dr. Martin after the board approved his resignation.

Harris County school boards’ search for a new superintendent began when Craig Dowling retired last December. Human Resources Director Jeff Branham has been serving as interim during the search. Despite doing “an amazing job” filing in, according to board chair Karen Hopkins, he did not want to be considered for the opening. The board opened up the process and received about 30 applicants. After a long round of interviews, the board all agreed on one candidate.

“We really had some great choices, but in the final analysis, we felt very strongly, unanimously actually, about Dr. Martin,” said Karen Hopkins, Harris County board chair.

The board is expected to make things official at Thursday’s board meeting. Martin says he and his family plan on moving to Harris County within the next few months.

“Every change brings opportunity and I'm looking forward to that door of opportunity and the challenges associated with it,” said Dr. Martin.

Martin is expected to start on July 1st. The Chattahoochee County school board has not set a timetable for hiring a new superintendent. They're planning on performing the search through the Georgia School Board Association and hope to hire someone before Martin leaves.

A salary for the position has not been set. Craig Dowling was paid $135,000 dollars a year for serving as superintendent for the Harris County School District, which has about 5,200 students. Dr. Jimmy Martin’s salary is $107,800 at Chattahoochee County, which has nearly 1,000 students.

The bulk of the rain has been well to our west today and will stay that way for the duration of tonight and tomorrow. We'll only see an isolated shower or storm the next few days due to most of the tropical moisture lifting well north of us. That's all due to an area of low pressure in the upper Midwest that is sucking it all north. This will leave us on the warm and humid side of things, which is why isolated showers and storms are in the forecast the next few days.
