YOUNGSVILLE, N.C. - The personal data of millions of Internet users has been at risk for quite some time due to a hole in the security of many web servers.

The Heartbleed bug has been undetected for two years until it was revealed earlier this week. The bug allows hackers to access to financial numbers and personal information while Internet users think they are on a secured site, according to the Associated Press.

Tony Hayden is president of Sabre Networks, a Youngsville-based computer security company. He said changing passwords is the best way to protect a user from the bug.

But changing a password is not always the answer.

“If the site is still vulnerable, changing your password is not going to do you any good,” said Hayden. “You don’t know if that service provider has updated their software or not.”

An updated OpenSSL has been released to protect against the Heartbleed but it is up to individual websites to implement the changes, according to the AP.

Hayden said users may start to ask some pointed questions as the breech becomes more public.

“We may see some blowback on why this wasn’t made public a little bit sooner,” Hayden said.
