Smiths Station keeps playoff hopes alive, beats Central in extras

Posted: Updated:
PHENIX CITY, Ala. - The Smiths Station Panthers beat the Central Red Devils, 3-2, in eight innings Thursday night.

The win keeps the Panthers' playoff hopes alive. They need Auburn to win game one Friday against Opelika, and they also need to beat Central in game one, also on Friday.

Max Newton (SSHS) and Weston Dawson (CHS) each started and pitched into the eighth, but neither figured in the decision.

After a controversial play at the plate kept the game tied in the bottom of the seventh, Smiths Station scored two in the eighth. Central answered with one and had the winning run on base in the bottom, but could not get him home.
