Governor Signs Education Budget

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The stare down between Governor Robert Bentley and the legislature ends with Bentley signing the education budget.  The Governor says there’s a lot he likes in the budget like funding the PEE-HIP insurance program.  He says he really wanted the 2% raise for teachers but felt that he couldn’t fight the legislature at this time.

Bentley says he reserves the right to call a special session later in the year when financial figures are out.  He says at this time he doesn’t feel he can change legislator’s minds on the raise issue.  Republican legislators have said the state doesn’t have the money to fund the educator’s insurance program fully and pay for a raise.  Governor Bentley insisted they could afford to do both.
