A man booked into the Unicoi County Jail Thursday night died early Friday morning, according to the county sheriff.

Sheriff Mike Hensley said the Erwin Police Department charged Nathan Silvers, 38, Flag Pond, with DUI and drug charges after being called on a report of an intoxicated person at a gas station on Main Street around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Hensley said Silvers was placed in a cell by himself and that he was periodically checked on by jail staff.

Around 2 a.m. he was found to be unresponsive. CPR was performed and he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Hensley said.

District Attorney General Tony Clark was notified of the death, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was also called to investigate.

An autopsy on Silvers’ body was ordered.

Hensley said this is the first inmate death at the jail since he has been sheriff.
