Muscogee Co. School Superintendent proposes new early education plan

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Muscogee County Schools Superintendent wants to revamp early education. Superintendent David Lewis laid out his plan to board members in a work session Monday night.

The proposed plan will consolidate the 30 Pre-K sites into 9 "Early Success Centers.” Lewis told board members there were about 1,100 students enrolled in Pre-K this year, and expects the same amount under the program. The proposal will introduce a pilot Head Start program for 3-year-olds and takes into consideration the new standards imposed on early education programs in Georgia.

“This will ensure that our students will enter kindergarten prepared and over the course over the next few years as the standards roll out, you'll see that we're aligning our teachers to be certified and qualified to teach those standards and certainly better prepare them for their education career,” said Lewis.

Lewis says the plan won't cost any jobs or tax-payers money. The program is expected to be funded by state and federal dollars, according to Lewis. The board is expected to vote on the proposal at next week’s meeting. The superintendent will hold three public forums at the following date and times to present and answer questions about the proposed plan:
  • April 15: Eagle Ridge Academy, 6 p.m
  • April 23: Rigdon Road Elementary, 6 p.m.
  • April 30: South Columbus Elementary, 6 p.m.
