Escaped inmate tased twice, jumps in lake during capture

LEE COUNTY, Ala. -

Authorities say it took two stun guns and a swim through a lake to capture an escaped inmate.

Darrin Adams got away from a Muscogee County prison detail last Friday. This came months after he escaped from the Lee County Detention Center in December and another Georgia prison in 1994. Lee County authorities found him late Wednesday night.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a domestic dispute call in Salem late Wednesday night. After dealing with the dispute -- they saw a man acting suspicious, who turned out to be the escaped inmate they, along with other law enforcement agencies, had been looking for.

Adams's cousin lives where he was caught. He didn't talk to Adams when he got there, but talked to him before on the phone.

“My cousin called and said he was coming out here,” said Kenneth Grisset. “I said be smart, don't get dropped off at the house.”

It was advice Adams ignored. Authorities say he pulled up to the house in a taxi. Sheriff's deputies approached him and asked who he was -- he gave them a fake name, and that's when Adams took off running toward the woods.

“He ran through the woods and they thought he was in my house so they banged on the door wanting to come in my house. You can't come in without a warrant, he ain’t in here,” said Grisset.

Sheriff's deputies chased him through the woods. They tackled him, he escaped; they stunned him and he pulled the probes out and got away again. They tackled and stunned him a second time, but he broke free and jumped into the lake. Sheriff's deputies were finally able to get him from the water.

Captain Van Jackson of the Lee County Sheriff's office says deputies usually don't have to go to such extremes to apprehend someone.

“We see a little bit of every kind of situation, and always expect the unexpected in law enforcement. This would be one of those cases,” said Jackson.

Just four months earlier, Adams escaped from the Lee County jail. Jackson says he ran out the exit while another inmate was being released.

“If you have someone who is determined to flee from apprehension, they will go through whatever pain or whatever situation necessary to try and keep from being arrested,” said Jackson.

Captain Jackson says now that they have Adams back in jail, they will take extra precautions to keep him.

Adams will face charges in Alabama, then waive extradition and deal with the charges in Georgia.
