Kendrick Lady Cherokees get praise from UGA's Andy Landers

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA - One of the best parts about winning a state championship is getting a full calendar year to show off your championship ring. More honors game to the Kendrick Lady Cherokee’s basketball team Friday.

UGA coach Andy Landers helped present the Sportsvision awards in Columbus. They handed out awards to six different Cherokees. Landers says it is fun for him to get to interact with a team as dedicated as Kendrick.

“There are lots of high schools in the state of Georgia. But, there is only one state champion and that is Kendrick High. For them to be able to accomplish that, it will take a group effort. Its great coaches, great players, great parental and community support,” Landers says.

Khalia Lawrence was named player of the year and academic player of the year. Deja Cheatham was the most valuable player. This is the second state championship for coach Sterling Hicks at Kendrick.
