CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The Ronald McDonald House broke ground Tuesday on an expansion to its Chapel Hill location.

The new space will double the current square footage of the center to 40,000 square feet.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to stay while their children are in local hospitals.

The location in Chapel Hill helps more than 2,200 families each year but must turn away about 800 because there is not enough space.

Tnesha Davis has been staying at the Chapel Hill location since February after her son was born at 25 weeks weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces.

“It's not a place where it's a pity party. They're actually here to support you and to help you through this time,” Davis said. “You could make a lot of new friends here so don't come in thinking that it's just a doomsday because your child is in the hospital because they're going to uplift you."

Davis is expected to stay at the Chapel Hill location until July.

The expansion will include five new buildings that are designed for families to stay two weeks or longer.

The Ronald McDonald House launched a fundraising campaign Tuesday to help pay for the expansion.
