Democratic candidates for U.S. senate seat face off

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ga. - 3 democratic candidates, running for the soon to be open U.S. senate seat in Georgia, faced off Wednesday evening in a live debate at CSU's Riverside Theater Complex. Doctor Branko Radulovacki, former state senator Steen Miles, and Columbus resident, Todd Robinson went head to head. The 4th candidate, Michelle Nunn, did not participate.

The candidates faced questions from panelists, WRBL viewers, and audience members. They touched on more than 10 different topics during the hour long event. Candidates began the debate answering questions about the Affordable Care Act. While all were in support of the healthcare mandate, each had specific improvements they say they would introduce.

"I would certainly look to improve it. I would look to improve it from a cost standpoint, increase transparency," said Dr. Branko Radulovacki.

"I would introduce legislation to close the loopholes that allowed states like Georgia and others around the country to opt out of medicaid expansion," said Steen Miles.

"The approach that I would use is educating our public on the benefits and what it can do for affordable care," said Todd Robinson.

Another important topic, jobs. It had all 3 contenders talking about how they would work to create employment opportunities for Georgians. Each candidate also had a focal point of the debate. Dr. Rad was passionate about heath, pushing his plan to create Centers of Excellence across the state.

"These centers would invest in state of the art research to develop the appropriate treatment models and treatments for our veterans and military servicemen and women," said Dr. Rad.

Former state senator Steen Miles, focused on her ability to work across the isle to pass legislation that would benefit the citizens of Georgia.

"No one, either democrat or republican, has the deep personal and professional experiences that I possess to take to Washington and represent all Georgians," said Miles.

Todd Robinson focused on education and it's benefits for all Georgians.

"We need to harness those young, bright minds. Science, math, coming out of college and give them incentives to come back to the high school and catapult our young kids back to success," said Robinson.

The candidates will face off in the primary on May 20th.
