Local Officials Weigh in On Georgia Gun Bill

Posted: Updated:
Critics are calling it the ‘Guns Everywhere Bill.’ It was signed into law this week by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.

“I will put into law a gun bill that heralds self defense personal liberties and public safety,” said Gov. Deal.

The bill allows permitted gun owners to take a firearm almost anywhere they are allowed to be. Churches, bars, airports, even government buildings.

The NRA calls it one of the most comprehensive second amendment bills in the country.

Alabama representative Randy Davis says there may be pressure Alabama to one-up their neighbor and have more second amendment friendly laws.

“It does put a little pressure on you to try to satisfy constituent needs particularly if you are a border state,” said Rep. Davis.

His real concern is about people who are crossing borders.

“If I go to Georgia I understand that the regulations are different and i would say to those in Georgia that if they come to Alabama that we don’t have that particular piece of legislation,” said Rep. Davis.

However, Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran says he is really confused about why the Georgia bill getting so much attention. He says from where he sits there isn’t much between the Georgia Law and what’s on the books in Alabama.

“Really Alabama’s existing law and the law that Georgia just passed are very similar,’ said Cochran. “In Alabama you can carry weapons if you have a concealed carry permit in your vehicle loaded or on your person loaded onto public places and into public places.”

The sheriff says he is less worried about where people can carry as opposed to who is carrying.

“As long as there is a background check and the right people are carrying guns i don’t have an issue with where they are carrying their guns whether it be on college campuses or churches or public events as long as they are properly licensed,” said Cochran.

Alabama did have a bill in the legislature this year that would have expanded gun rights, but it didn’t make it to the governor’s desk.
