Special Report Preview: Red Light Cameras

Posted: Updated:

A year has passed since Opelika and Phenix City installed red light cameras at various intersections. In a special report tonight at 11/10 Central -- News Three's David Hurst finds out whether these cameras have made the intersections safer, or they’re just for making the city money.

Many communities have gotten rid of the red light cameras because they weren't generating the revenue they hoped. Phenix City and Opelika officials say it's not about the money; they say the number one priority is public safety and keeping the intersections safe. However, many cities that put up red light cameras see an increase in the amount of accidents that happen at the intersection.

On tonight’s special report, we’ll show you if the red light cameras in Opelika and Phenix City are making the intersections safer, how much money the cities have made and why some critics say the cameras are just "cash cows" for communities.

Tune in tonight at 11/10 Central on WRBL News 3 for the special report.
