Smiths Station baseball preps for Auburn, wins Athletes of the Week

SMITHS STATION, Ala. -

Coming off a sweep of Lee-Montgomery, the Smiths Station Panthers are set up for a rematch with a familiar foe in round two, and are the latest Headquarter Nissan Athletes of the Week.

Smiths Station will face Auburn in a three-game series beginning on Friday. These two teams met in a classic series last season, with Auburn winning in three games.

“We’re glad to have the opportunity to take on that challenge,” said Smiths Station head coach Mike Ferry. “Auburn’s a good team. They’re always a good team. We look forward to the opportunity of playing them now.”

The Panthers are younger than they were last year, so outside expectations were low coming into the season. But after a rough start to region play, the team caught fire.

“We started region and we lost the first game to Opelika, and the next two we beat them pretty bad,” said sophomore shortstop Devin Brown. “We swept Central, and we’re trying to take this momentum into the playoffs and take it as deep as we can.”

“We started the season out hot, then we had our issues, but we’ve come together really well in the past few weeks,” said senior catcher Cody Harrison. “We’ve gotten a lot better as a team. We’re playing pretty good right now.”

The Panthers hope to change their fortunes against Auburn, who won the season series against Smith Station on the way to the area title. Game one starts at 5:00 p.m. CT at Auburn High on Friday.
