Severe weather threat ends; leaves behind flooding concerns

Any chance of seeing severe storms in the area today has passed us by.  Rain and thunderstorms continue in Georgia counties well south of Columbus, but these are not expected to reach severe limits today.

We received a break of sorts, as the huge complex of storms that came through Tuesday morning served to disrupt a potentially volatile atmosphere.  Also, the development of new storms closer to the Gulf coast, which have produced serious flooding there, helped to break up the inflow of low-level moisture necessary for severe storms and tornadoes.  As a result, we saw a very different situation develop on Tuesday night compared to what transpired Sunday and Monday.

By this evening, a cold front will move past Columbus and into central Georgia, ending all rain in this area.  Estimated amounts in Marion, Stewart, Quitman, Clay, and Randolph counties range upwards of 3 inches of rain in the 24 hours up to midday Wednesday.  An Areal Flood Warning is in effect for several counties from this excessive rainfall.

Cooler weather and some clearing will move in for Thursday and Friday behind tonight's cold front.
