TAMPA, FL (WFLA) - It's Melanoma Monday and 8 On Your Side is keeping you safe from the sun.

Unlike other cancers, you can actually see Melanoma on the surface of the body. The good news is you can help prevent this deadly form of cancer with sunscreen, protective clothing, and regular exams.

"The incidents are significantly increasing. Therefore we should be extremely concerned and careful. The most important aspect is really regular preventative exams," said Board Certified Dermatologist Panos Vasiloudes.

Dr. Vasiloudes says about one case of Melanoma is diagnosed each day at the Academic Alliance in Dermatology in Tampa.

If caught early, Melanoma is highly treatable. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

As we get ready for the summer on Bay area beaches, remember prevention and early detection save lives.
