Election Watch 2014: Miller defeats Brown in race for sheriff

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Hans Miller defeated Ed Brown in Tuesday night's primary election. Brown has been Onslow County's sheriff for nearly 24 years.
And there is going to be a pretty big change when a new sheriff takes office after the general election.
9 On Your Sid talked with Miller and Onslow County residents about the race Wednesday.

Many people 9 On Your Side spoke with said the result of the race wasn't that surprising and Miller shared what he plans to do if he is elected the next sheriff in November as well as the race against Brown.
"Politics can get dirty," Hans Miller said, reflecting on the controversial campaign against the current sheriff, Brown.

During the campaign, Brown raised Miller’s past health issues and tied him to a suspect in a series of Onslow County bomb threats, something Miller denied.

A day later, people across Onslow County are still reacting to the results of the heated race and the controversy surrounding it.
"I don't much care for Ed Brown because he's been around so long he's got the community believing in what he's doing is right or wrong, and the community does it,” said Monica Bond, who’s happy with the election results. “So a new face and new ideas will be great."
"I think he dug his own grave by what he did,” added Leo Riznik, who’s also happy with the election results. “It wasn't necessary to do what he did."

9 On Your Side reached out to Sheriff Brown today along with his campaign manager, who said he’ll have more to say soon.

In the meantime, Miller says he already has plans for what he will do as sheriff.
"I want to meet with every single employee, sit down and get their input because in order to fix things, you need to know what's happened," said Hans Miller, Onslow Co. Sheriff candidate
Miller says he has a strong law enforcement background, serving in different roles around the area. He says he knows there is a lot that needs to be fixed.
"What we will do is we will reduce the response time and then every three months we'll have town hall meetings which people from all over the county are going to be invited to," he added.
With a new sheriff coming to Onslow County, Miller has a message as he prepares for the general election.
"I cannot be bought. I will stand up for the people. This foundation of integrity is solid. I will tell the truth,” he said.
Other people 9 On Your Side spoke with said they voted for Ed Brown in every election until this one, but felt there needed to be a change in Onslow County.

Sheriff Brown says he’ll address the media at the end of next week.
