Kinston site part of training for wildfire season

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. - Several agencies came together Wednesday for a unique training in the east.
The North Carolina Air National Guard and it's MAFF-8 team joined local forest rangers in Kinston to practice putting out wildfires.

MAFFs are large water tankers that can drop 3,000 gallons of water in less than 5 seconds. There are only 2 in the country.
They have pressure nozzles through side doorways that can target specific areas.
Today's practice drop showed off the plane's capabilities.
It's never been used on a fire in the east, but, if necessary, Governor McCrory can call it into action.

The aircraft are critical today as many of the large water bombers are out of service.
