Glenwood sweeps Pike for 20th state title

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -

The Glenwood Gators are state champions for the 20th time in program history.

Glenwood swept Pike Academy, 6-1 and 4-1, Wednesday morning to claim the title.

Tanner Thomason got the win in game one, throwing a complete game and striking out four. The Gators struck for three in the second and added one in the fifth on a Matthew Brabston base hit to take the lead.

Game two was all about the senior, Lawson Humphries. Named tournament Most Valuable Player, Humphries went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits and striking out 13, including four of the last six he faced.

The win caps a storybook week for Glenwood after their extra-inning, come-from-behind semifinal win.

“Last week, I don’t know how we won that game, still,” Humphries said. “It’s still amazing. It’s all these guys, it’s everybody. It’s not one individual.”

Head coach Tim Fanning said this was the youngest team he’s coached, but also called the team chemistry outstanding.

“I’m just so proud of them,” Fanning said. “They did whatever it took. They listened, they were so unselfish. They didn’t care about stats. It’s about wins, playing for the ‘G,’ and serving the program.”
