NC workers pressure Reynolds on field conditions

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -

Farm labor activists are again protesting outside a cigarette-maker's annual meeting in North Carolina to draw attention to the treatment of field workers.

The Farm Labor Organizing Committee says it will protest outside Thursday's annual shareholder meeting of cigarette giant Reynolds American Inc. in Winston-Salem.

The farm workers say the company should use its buying power to force farm owners to improve working conditions for thousands of tobacco workers in the state. But company executives have refused for years to meet on the issue.

Reynolds has said the company's role is not to negotiate on behalf of non-Reynolds workers.
