New Bern PD hosts Coffee with a Cop

Posted: Updated:
Thursday morning officers with the New Bern Police Department gathered with community members to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee.

New Bern Police say Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about how the department is making an impact in local neighborhoods.

Officers tell 9 On Your Side that the majority of contact law enforcement has with the public happens during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Police hope Coffee with a Cop will break down barriers and allow for one-on-one interaction in a relaxed environment.

"We certainly want to build the trust of the community so they trust us and doing the job they ask us to do we want to serve the community we want to do it right and that's what we’re doing is building that trust" said  Sergeant Doug Ipock of the New Bern Police Department.

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.
