South Columbus Walmart to create 300 jobs

COLUMBUS, Ga. - A new Walmart Supercenter is expected to create 300 new jobs in Columbus, Mayor Teresa Tomlinson announced Thursday morning. The new store will be built on Victory Drive on the site of the old Baker High School.

Many South Columbus residents say if they want to go to Walmart now, they have to drive about 15 minutes to the one on Buena Vista Road. They say getting one in South Columbus is long overdue. South Columbus resident Annie Guy says she has to drive across town to get good deals and variety, but when the new Walmart is built, she says she'll save gas and money.

“There's a lot of excitement behind it,” said Guy, “All I can do is laugh because I’m so happy about it.”

It's a project that Tomlinson says has been going on since long before she took office. She says city council started trying to bring a Walmart to South Columbus in 2004.

“Walmart doesn't come here just because they like the people or just because the mayor or councilors asked them to,” said Tomlinson. “They come to where they're going to be profitable.”

The initial capital investment for the project is $16-million dollars and the building is expected to be 150,000 square feet. There will be extra 21,000 square feet of retail space around the Walmart, so there's a potential for restaurants, banks or other stores around the Supercenter. Tomlinson says they will begin construction by the end of this year, and then it will take about 18 months to be built.
