BIRMINGHAM, AL - A Birmingham man has been arrested after allegedly hitting a Birmingham police officer with his car on Saturday. 

According to the Birmingham Police Department, 84-year-old Tom Pole was charged with first-degree assault. He's currently being held at the Jefferson County jail in lieu of $60,000 bond. 

Police say Pole was under the influence of alcohol when he struck Officer Brandon Smith. 

Smith suffered a broken left leg and a broken right elbow, both of which required surgery to correct. He also suffered a dislocated shoulder. Currently, he's still recovering in the hospital.
