NAGS HEAD, N.C. - An unusual fish was found on the NC coast Monday night.

A lancetfish turned up in the surf just south of Jeanette’s Pier in Nags Head. The pier is part of the North Carolina Aquariums.

Biologists tell pier officials that the deepwater species of fish rarely come close to shore. They’re more of an open ocean or pelagic fish.

The fish was later released alive.
