PurpleStride raises funds, awareness to fight pancreatic cancer

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Supporters of PurpleStride will form a sea of purple Saturday around the Triangle.

The annual run/walk raises money and awareness to fight pancreatic cancer. Research into a cure is significantly under funded despite it being the fourth leading cause of cancer death.

“I just assumed it was death sentence,” said Ted Seagroves. He was diagnosed with the disease in 2012.

Seagroves underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to beat the disease. But two weeks ago, he found out the cancer had returned.

He credits walks like PurpleStride with saving lives.

“The survival rate has not changed much in the last 40 years,” he said. “We need to push for early detection, which was the real reason I am here today.”

Around 46,000 Americans will be diagnosed with the disease this year, according to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Around 39,000 will die from it.

PCAN said only two percent of the National Cancer Institutes’ budget does to research into pancreatic cancer.

Registration for PurpleStride starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at 851 Partners Way on North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus.

The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with the run/walk starting at 10 a.m.
