RALEIGH, N.C. -

The N.C. Highway Patrol is joining its counterparts across the country to get motorists to change lanes or slow down when they approach emergency vehicles on roadsides.

The "Move Over" awareness campaign begins after last weekend's crash that killed a Nashville, Tennessee, Metro officer while he was investigating an accident on Interstate 65. A tractor-trailer struck and killed 25-year-old Officer Michael Petrina, even though drivers had a two-mile notice.

Recently, the Tennessee Highway Patrol launched a social media campaign. As a result, law enforcement agencies across the country are spreading the message through Facebook and Twitter.

Since 1999, more than 164 U.S. law enforcement officers have been struck and killed by vehicles. In North Carolina, six troopers have been struck and killed since the patrol was formed in 1929.
